Local Maps Setup
A promoted pin on Google Maps, and adverts that show your address and a directions link
We link your Google Business Profile to your own Google Ads account, switch on location assets, count the people who ask for directions or call, build one Search campaign around your premises, and set up a promoted pin for your premises on Google Maps. Your adverts can then show your address, how far away you are and a directions link, on Google Search and in Google Maps, and your pin can appear on the map itself. £195, one-off.
Why the Business Profile link matters
A Google Search campaign on its own shows text adverts. Linked to a verified Business Profile, the same campaign can carry your address, your distance from the person searching and a directions link, and it becomes eligible to appear in Google Maps, where people look for somewhere to go now.
Google does not run Search adverts in Maps on their own: a Search campaign that can appear in Maps also shows on Google Search (Google’s guide to advertising in Google Maps). So both are set up together, in one campaign. The promoted pin comes from a second campaign, described next.
What a promoted pin is
A promoted pin is an advert on the map itself. Google shows it as a square pin at your address, so it stands out among the usual round pins of the other places on the map (Google’s guide to advertising in Google Maps).
Google names four places where a promoted pin can appear: when someone browses the map, when someone searches in Google Maps, along the route when someone looks at directions, and from time to time during driving navigation. A pin does not show when the map is zoomed out, and pins compete for a limited number of places, so Google decides when yours appears.
A Search campaign cannot show a promoted pin. Google lists four campaign types that can: Performance Max for store goals, Smart campaigns, Travel campaigns for Things to do, and Demand Gen. We use a Demand Gen campaign with its ad group set to show in Google Maps only, so the pin’s budget is not spent on YouTube, Gmail or Google’s other placements.
The pin advert is built from your logo, your photographs and a few short lines of text written with you, and it links to a page on your website. It can only show once your Business Profile is linked and your location asset is active, and both are part of the same setup.
Promoted pins are included in Local Maps Setup, at no extra fee.
What is included
-
Business Profile check
Category, address, opening hours, phone number, website and services checked against what you sell, and corrected with you. Your adverts take the address and hours from the profile, so the profile has to be right first.
-
Linked to your own Google Ads account
Your Business Profile linked to a Google Ads account in your business’s name, on your card. If you do not have an account yet, we create one and you add your card.
-
Location assets switched on
So your adverts can show your address, your distance and a directions link, and can appear in Google Maps search results and suggestions. An active location asset is also what makes your premises eligible for a promoted pin.
-
Directions and calls counted
Local actions, Google’s count of people who ask for directions, call or visit your website from your adverts, switched on in your account. Direction requests, calls and website visits are all counted and reported to you. The Search campaign starts on Maximise clicks, with a cost-per-click limit you agree, so its spend stays predictable while the first direction requests come in.
-
One Search campaign around your premises
Exact-match keywords for the services you sell, as people search for them near you (for example “hair salon bath” and “hair salon near me”), adverts written for them, negative keywords, and location targeting set to the area your customers come from.
-
A promoted pin on Google Maps
One Demand Gen campaign with one ad group set to show in Google Maps only, targeting the same area, and one advert built from your logo, your photographs and text written with you, so your premises can appear as a promoted pin on the map. It has its own daily budget, agreed with you and paid by you to Google, and starts on Maximise clicks.
-
A record, and a check two weeks later
A one-page record of every setting. Two weeks after the campaigns start, we read the searches the Search campaign showed for and add the negative keywords they call for, and report how often your promoted pin was shown and clicked.
What you need before we start
- Premises that customers visit, with a verified Google Business Profile. If the profile is not verified yet, we start Google’s verification with you; Google sets how long it takes. If you do not have a profile yet, Business Profile Setup creates one with you for £49.
- Manager access for us to your Business Profile (how to give it) and to your Google Ads account (how to give it), which you can remove at any time.
- Your logo and a few photographs you own of your premises or what you sell, for the promoted pin advert. Photographs already on your Business Profile can be used.
- An advertising budget for each of the two campaigns, paid by you to Google. We agree the daily amounts with you on the call.
Not included: Performance Max campaigns, conversion tracking on your website, landing pages, review campaigns, Business Profile posts, and ongoing management. Those are in the full setup and the monthly plans below.

Questions
Will my adverts show only in Google Maps?
Not all of them. Your Search campaign shows on Google Search, and with location assets switched on it can also appear in Google Maps search results and suggestions; Google does not run Search adverts in Maps on their own. Your promoted pin campaign is set to show in Google Maps only. Google decides which searches and which map views show your adverts.
Will my pin always show on the map?
No. Google shows promoted pins only when the map is zoomed in far enough, and pins compete for a limited number of places. Google decides when yours appears. The two-week check reports how often it was shown and clicked.
What are local actions?
Google’s count of the things people do from an advert that carries your address: asking for directions, calling, visiting your website. They are available to any account with active location assets (Google’s explanation). For a business people visit, a request for directions is often the closest thing to a booking that an advert can count.
Why Search and Demand Gen, and not Performance Max?
One Search campaign with exact-match keywords shows you exactly which searches bring people to your door. Performance Max for store goals can also show a promoted pin, but it spends across Google Search, YouTube, Gmail and Google’s other placements at once, which makes it harder to see what brought people in. A Demand Gen campaign set to Google Maps only gives you the pin with its own figures. Performance Max is better added later, once the Search campaign and the pin have shown what works.
What if customers do not come to my premises?
Then Local Maps Setup is not the right fit. If you are a trade that visits customers, such as a plumber or an electrician, Local Services Ads Setup may be.
Do I have to sign up for monthly management?
No. It is a one-off. Your Business Profile and your Google Ads account stay in your name, and you keep every setting.
Who is it for?
Independent businesses with premises that customers visit, such as salons, clinics, cafés, shops and showrooms, that want to be found by people searching nearby.
